Sevenoaks Nature Reserve with Denis

This morning I arrived at Sevenoaks Nature Reserve at around 7.50am and waited a few mins for Denis to arrive, the first hide in the area of the visitor centre has a wasps nest within so I decided to stay without!

I had all my gear with me today, Camera, Scope and Bins and notepad, alas as I took the 1st photo the message on the camera screen stated that I did not have my SD card inserted, this was correct as it was still in my computer at home!

There was a lot of birds calling out in the fine warm morning and a fair few flying about, our list is as follows:

MAGPIE
WOOD PIGEON
CARRION CROW
BLACKBIRD
ROBIN
CANADA GEESE
MUTE SWANS
BLACK HEADED GULLS
BLACKCAPS
BLUE TIT
DUNNOCK
LAPWING
MALLARD
COOTS
MOORHENS
GREAT CRESTED GREBE
TUFTED DUCKS
GREY LAG GEESE
REED WARBLER
WOOD WARBLER
CHIFFCHAFF
GREAT SPOTTED WOODPECKER
A FAMILY OF 6 TREECREEPERS
CHAFFINCH
NUTHATCH X2

That gave us 25 species just along one path, they were also catching birds in Mist Nets today for ringing purposes which was interesting to view.

The couple of pictures below were take with my IPhone.

Roman Snail (note the 5p for size comarison)

Common Mallow

Evening Primrose

Gatekeeper ( male)

  2. Hey Phil,
Did you tell Dave about the wasp nest!!! :-)

Are you sure about the Wood warbler ? A very scarce bird to find in July - around these parts anyway

  3. Yes on the mallow. You sure saw a lot of birds! I'm a closeted birder right now so I will secretly admit that it's a fun past time:)

  4. Warren,we spotted it in the mist nest, the girl on the ringing told us it was a wood warbler, and I said to her its not what I thought it was then, I thought it was a Chiffchaff and had convinced myself until she told me different, she said something to do with only 5 or 6 markings on the primary wing? still looked like a chiffchaff to me though.
